Life of Agony’s sophomore album sanded down the Brooklyn outfit’s early hardcore influences to instead harness a more despairing brand of alt-metal. In the absence of crossover-speedy segues and tough-as-nails gang vocals, the band leaned into resplendently inky guitar melodies and singer Keith Caputo’s rich and melancholy tenor. A brooding, introspective release featuring family drama (“Let’s Pretend”), cascading groove-metal (“Seasons”) and an achingly gloom-geared cover of Simple Minds’ “Don’t You (Forget About Me)”. While emotionally gutting, Ugly is a surprisingly gorgeous-sounding mid-Nineties masterwork.
